The Hottest Gadgets of the Year

Everybody is crazy about the latest high-tech gadgets and gizmos like super-slim MP4 players that can do nearly everything except shoot laser beams, advanced toy robots with artificial intelligence that are smarter than your math teacher and can transform into racing cars, micro RC helicopters that are small enough to manoeuver in a shoebox and USB turntables that are able to shrink your vast record collection down to the size of a micro chip.

But which gadgets and gizmos are really hot this year? What are the must-have gadgets of 2007, what’s going to be big next year and where can you get all this awe-inspiring stuff for a reasonable price?
That’s a lot of questions! For starters, here’s a short list of the most exciting gadgets for winter 2007/2008.

The Top 10 most remarkable Gadgets and Gizmos include:

1. Walkie Talkie Watches are elegant high quality wristwatches with full clock function that are also real professional mobile radio communicators with voice activation. They’re perfect for hiking, biking, mountaineering and other outdoor sports and - best of all - they let you communicate for free. Can your super-expensive iPhone do that?

2. A stylish hybrid between a chopper and an insect, the innovative Micro Mosquito RC Helicopter is the tiniest, lightest and most stable indoor flyer in the world and it’s so incredibly easy to navigate that even your kids can fly it in a china shop with their eyes closed.

3. The handy Ion USB Turntable allows you to convert your vinyl records into MP3s while listening to them. All you have to do is plug it into the USB port of your computer, put a record on and press “Play”. It also has a 3.5mm input jack so you can use the turntable as a converter for your tape deck or Mini Disc player.

4. The elegant Archos Gmini 402 Pocket Multimedia Center is a user-friendly 20GB multimedia player that lets you watch videos and photos, lets you listen to your favourite tunes and even lets you play games. You can plug it into your telly, computer or digital camera and it’s also a powerful digital recording unit. A must-have for multi media enthusiasts!

5. Who woulda think this? The Stylophone is back in style! One of the most bizarre inventions of the 70s is the ingenious Stylophone Pocket Organ. David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Pulp and even Kraftwerk used Stylophones on their recordings. Thirty years after the first Stylophone-craze, the fantastic electronic musical instrument makes its comeback with new features like volume control, headphone jack and cool new sounds. You can even plug in your iPod or MP3 player to play along to your favourite songs.

6. The environmental friendly, muscle powered Can Crusher reduces your empty beer cans to a fifth of their size. Can you drink as fast as the crusher crushes? It also has an in-built bottle-opener in case you prefer bottles.

7. Digital Photo Frames let you display your digital pictures in a new way without the need for a computer. They come in an assortment of colours, styles and sizes and are simply perfect for your office desktop or bedside locker.

8. The amazing SpiderSapien Spider-Man Robot does whatever a spider can! Well, almost. It’s as if the award-winning Robosapien was bitten by a radioactive spider: This awesome 2’ tall biomorphic robot looks like Spidey, talks like Spidey, has “Spider-Sense” and even pretends to shoot spider-webbing from his wrist like Spider-Man!

Buyers Guide To Video Game Consoles – Seven Vital Tips

There is now a video games console to suit practically every need, taste and budget. But the range and diversity of gaming systems, never mind the games themselves is a daunting prospect to the uninitiated.

This guide - adapted from Johnny Minkley’s excellent overview of video game consoles at productsifter (dot) com - will answer all your questions, and arm you with the information you need to make your purchase in confidence.

The raison d’etre of any games console is, fundamentally, gaming, notes Johnny. But today’s systems offer much more. Are you an online gamer? Are childrens’ games a priority? Want to take full advantage of that 50-inch flat-screen plasma TV? Or are you just looking for cheap hassle-free fun with friends and family?

Johnny, who has been using video game consoles for 20 years and writing about them for more than seven, concludes that:

Nintendo Wii is the best console for families

Nintendo DS Lite is the best handheld console

PlayStation 2 is the best budget console

Xbox 360 is the best console for online gaming

The new PlayStation 3 is the best high-definition video games console

Once you’ve decided what you want the console for and which one to get, where next? Here are the key things to keep in mind to buy a games console in complete confidence:

1. Watch out for worthless extras

Many shops offer bundle deals in addition to selling stand-alone consoles. Typically they throw a load of games in for “free”. While the savings can be substantial with such deals they can also be illusionary. Are the “free” games on offer actually worth having? If you are not careful you could end up spending more than you intended on games you will never play so check them out first.

2. Make sure all the essentials are included

Do not assume everything you need to get your console working will come in the box. Extras you may need to purchase separately may include additional handsets for multiplayer games; subscriptions for online gaming; and special cables which will boost the audio and visual performance of your unit.

3. Compare Prices

Retail competition in this market is fierce, so shop around for the best prices. Game (and to a lesser extend) console prices vary wildly from place to place, so doing research in advance and checking prices on-line makes sense. Unless you really need to buy the latest blockbuster on day of its release, wait a month or two - all games are reissued on budget labels and console prices also fall over time.

4. Duck and Dive

Staff at specialist computer games stores are much more likely to have expert knowledge than their equivalents at supermarkets and the like. But if the supermarket is cheaper, don’t be afraid to take advice from one place and buy in another. Also, consider asking the specialist store for a discount if you know the product is available for less elsewhere.

5. Read Expert Reviews

Don’t know your Halos from your Half-Lifes? Websites such as ProductSifter (dot) com, Gamerankings (dot) com and Metacritic (dot) com all have excellent reviews and rankings for a wide range of video console and game products.

6. Test before you buy

Many games shops have in-store demo units, so you can take a game or a console for a test run before you buy. Remember, you can also rent video games or use online clubs like Swapgame (dot) com to cut costs further.

7. Check the age ratings

Every video game should have an age rating. In Europe, the Pan-European Game Information standard is used. It is not legally binding, but offers a clear guide to parents about a game’s suitability for children. Also, any game featuring mature or realistic content is rated by the British Board of Film Classification. For more on this subject go to: AskAboutGames (dot) com.

Nintendo Wii – Intuitive Game Play Guaranteed

The Nintendo Wii is a video gaming console introduced by Nintendo. As a matter of fact, it could be compared to other gaming consoles such as the Sony Playstation 3 or the Xbox 360. Some people may prefer these other gaming consoles over it. However, the this console comes with its own set of advantages that make it a “must-have” among avid gamers.

For one, the controller of the Nintendo Wii is very impressive. Bluetooth wireless technology is used to translate the movements of a player's body directly onto the screen. This is quite an improvement over other gaming consoles, wherein users have to press buttons in order to initiate the desired changes. The game play thus becomes more engrossing and intuitive with it, which is the purpose of video games in the first place.

One could say that the gaming experience has become more passionate with the Nintendo Wii. The Wii remote is one of its kind. The remote is quite slim and looks more like the remote for your television. The remote is connected wirelessly with the console. In addition, innovative motion sensors are a part of this sophisticated remote. This sensor can distinguish movement in three dimension.

With the Nintendo Wii, one can relate physically with the virtual world. With this gaming console, even a game with simplistic game play becomes more interesting and engrossing. Players feel as if they are actually playing the games which make them more fascinated with this gaming console.

It can be said that this device has given an altogether different dimension to video gaming. Thanks to the intuitive motion control system, players using this gaming console can make the most of their leisure time. Playing a game with the Nintendo Wii is a great way to de-stress and wind up after a hectic day's of work.

Which iPod Are You?

There’s an iPod made for each one of you so what are you waiting for? Grab one iPod (or more) that are specially made for you! Are you a Shuffle lover or perhaps a Nano, Classic or Touch lover? I know I love the iPod Touch so much that I can melt by just seeing the pictures. Don’t you? Let iPod carry everything in your collection everywhere you go! Trust me, you won’t regret it.

In case you were unaware, Apple is a big player in the portable media player market. IPod can play MP3, AAC/M4A, Protected AAC, AIFF, WAV, Audible audiobook and Apple Lossless audio file formats and they even introduced the ability to display JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, and PNG image file formats. Additionally, iPod Classic can play MPEG-4 (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) and QuickTime video formats, with restrictions on video dimensions, encoding techniques and data-rates.

At first, iPod software only worked with Macs; however, starting with the second generation model, iPod software worked with Windows and Macs so for all Windows user, you don’t have to worry about the compatibility issue anymore. Just so you know, Apple does not support Microsoft's WMA audio format and MIDI files but it can be converted to audio files using iTunes. The iPod is associated with one host computer. Each time an iPod connects to its host computer, iTunes can synchronize entire music libraries or music playlists either automatically or manually.

Ok, enough about the iPod introductions. I’ll get straight to the point. I am promoting iPod for a seller and if you want to purchase iPod cheaper than the market price, let me know. I can hook you up with a nice deal. (Sorry, for Malaysian only) How to place an order? Simple, just click the image below and fill in the form. I will e-mail you back as soon as I can. You can C.O.D (seller location: Nilai/JB) or ask to be ship to your address (I’ve been told the shipping is free).

iPods Summary:

iPod Shuffle: 1GB (RM320)

If you like your music playback simple and your device nearly invisible, the third-generation iPod Shuffle will suit you well. But absent minded users should steer clear of this easy-to-misplace player.
Dimensions (WxDxH): 1.6 in x 0.4 in x 1.1 in, Estimated battery life: 12 hours.

iPod Nano: 4GB (RM570), 8GB (RM770)

The shape may have changed, but Apple's relentless attention to detail remains. The third generation of the iPod Nano provides loads of entertainment for a down-to-earth price.
Estimated battery life: 24 hours (Audio), 5 hours (Video)

iPod Classic: 80GB (RM995), 160GB (RM1335)

The iPod Classic is a refinement of the formula that put the iPod on the map. Few can match its combination of storage capacity, battery life, and advanced user interface.
Estimated battery life: For 80GB - 30 hours (Audio), 5 hours (Video). For 160GB - 40 hours (Audio), 7 hours (Video)

iPod Touch: 8GB (RM1250), 16GB (RM1590)

The iPod Touch is a beautiful product, inside and out. Unfortunately, its lean capacity keeps it from reigning as king of the iPods.
Estimated battery life: 22 hours (Audio), 5 hours (Video)

Package includes: Earphones, USB cable, dock adapter and 1 year warranty from Apple. All items are brand new with seal. Why should I trust this seller? See the feedback given from buyer who have bought iPod from him before.

Get Internet On Your PSP

You may not know that a PSP can pick up free wireless internet! So many users are blissfully unaware of what their machine is capable of, but it can be quite easy to set up if you know what to do! This guide will tell you exactly how to get internet on your PSP!
Requirements:
You will need to obtain two essential needs before you can start surfing the web with your PSP. You must be able to get some form of wireless internet source. It could originate anywhere, either from within your own home or in your local Starbucks, you just need to be in an area where the internet is available. Psp wireless settings adhere to the 802.11b wireless networking protocols, probably the most common anywhere, so virtually any wireless network connection will work for this. You will also need to get hold of a copy of Wipeout:Pure, which you need to get internet on your PSP.
Ready to start? Now we will start to learn how to get internet on PSP!
Step 1- Switch on the PSP and go to the System Menu, and then enter “Network Settings”. Go from there to “Infrastructure mode”, and select a connection to edit. Select your home connection if you already have one set up. Don't alter the name of the profile, keep it as it is, and leave the WLAN settings alone if they are already set up.
Step 2- Go into “Address Settings” click on “Custom” and make sure you leave “IP Address Setting” as Automatic. If you adjust this, you could have a lot of trouble getting internet on your PSP!
Step 3- Go into “DNS Setting” and click on manual. Here we need to enter the address of our web gateway. For this, the most popular one to use is the gateway at Endgadget, so enter the numbers “208.42.28.174” as the Primary DNS IP, and put zeros for the Secondary DNS IP. (0.0.0.0). If this gateway doesn't work for you, you can find alternatives by doing a quick search engine search.
Step 4- In the “Proxy Server” options, select “Do Not Use” Once you have done this, you just need to confirm everything, and when you are prompted to, save it all by pushing X.
Step 5- Launch Wipeout:Pure in the usual way, and go into the Downloads menu. As soon as you are asked to pick a connection, select the one that you have edited in the earlier steps, and you should find the Endgadget web screen right in front of you. That is how it is done! How to get internet on PSP!
As long as you have access to the resource mentioned earlier, it isn't difficult to get the internet on your PSP. When you have managed to get access to it, you will realise what a useful feature it is!

How to Downgrade Your PSP From 2.0 to 1.5

Downgrading your PSP from 2.0 to 1.5 involves rewriting the data stored in the flash memory on your PSP which contains the firmware. What is a firmware? In computing, firmware is a computer program that is embedded in a hardware device, for example a micro controller or a flash memory. As its name suggests, firmware is somewhere between hardware and software. Like software, it is a computer program which is executed by a computer. But it is also an intimate and vital part of a piece of hardware and without it, the hardware could not run.

Instructions on how to downgrade your firmware from 2.0 to 1.5 is provided below but always remember that firmware is an essential part of the PSP. Without it, your PSP is useless. Modifying firmware ex. Upgrading or downgrading always posses a risk of rendering your PSP completely useless. Any modification on the firmware must be done with caution.

How to downgrade your PSP from 2.0 to 1.5? Try out the steps enumerated below.

Nintendo Wii + Wii Sports - Good for fitness in children?

The Nintendo Wii it seems, puts pay to the concerns in recent years over the inactivity in children due to their interest in video games consoles. The Wii console really sets itself apart from the rest with its revolutionary motion sensitive controller, which actually requires movement in order to play the games.

The Nintendo Wii comes with the game Wii Sports, which includes tennis, baseball, bowling, golf and boxing. In tennis you will be swinging the remote as if it were a tennis racket and flicking it up to toss the ball into the air with a quick swing to serve. The other Wii Sports games work in a similar way simulating controller movements for like movements onscreen. Boxing however is the only Wii Sports game that uses the nunchuk attachment and is the most physically exhausting game of them all. In order to hit your opponent in the head or body, you will have to aim high or low with your swings.

There are three different activities with each game. In training mode, you will participate in random challenges, after which you will be assigned a fitness age, based on your performance. Sound familiar? The Nintendo DS game, Brain Training comes to mind...a physical version perhaps?

The important thing here is that gamers are becoming more physically active without even realising it - you could say it has a 'kill two birds with one stone' effect, combining video game play with physical activity. Given this 'physical' nature of the Wii, I wouldn't be suprised if parents rushed out to buy the Nintendo Wii just to get their kids off the sofa!

Another great thing about the Nintendo Wii is that it appeals not only to children and teens but to adults too, so its something the whole family can enjoy.

Could the Nintendo Wii revolutionize the way we play video games in the future? It will be interesting to see what Nintendo's competitors come up with next - this could be a tough one to beat!

7 Tips for Buying an Affordable Laptop

Computers for people on the go that is what laptops or notebooks are, your work and entertainment move with you. The computer markets are flooded with laptops of all kinds and configurations. There are laptops that have WAP cards that keep you connected to the World Wide Web and yet others that can be connected via cables to the internet through mobile phones or hotel cable connections. There are affordable laptops and state-of-art laptops that can run your life for you. In fact at a computer showcasing event a company showcased a laptop that can turn on washing machines, garden sprinklers, ovens, coffee makers, bath water, as well as home security systems. So, even if you are half way across town you can have hot coffee and a warm bath waiting for you when you return. Don’t be scared a laptop can be affordable too!

1. When planning look for older technology that works well. Don’t aim for the latest. You can buy slightly older laptops with wireless capabilities for lower amounts, two years ago a wireless laptop sold for USD 2500 now there are versions available for even USD1000.

2. Look for laptops with alternate technology. Often an AMD laptop may be more affordable than one that runs on Intel.

3. Used or refurbished laptops are sold for less than half the price of new ones. So you could think about buying one that is around one year old. Very often power users or gamers are so passionate about their laptop configurations that they immediately upgrade when newer technologies become available. Scan through gaming websites and for laptops on sale. The World Wide Web is a great place to buy laptops that are second hand. Look at Trading Sections for posts from gamers who want to sell gaming laptops.

4. Study configurations of laptops once you determine your needs. Try and choose a laptop that has at least 512 MB memory. A laptop with 512 MB can run most non graphic intensive applications.

5. Another aspect you need to look into is processor speed.

6. Try and buy a laptop that is branded this will ensure service and repair continuity.

7. Laptops are sold online at specialist as well as auction websites. So, get a laptop that suits your budget by going online and visiting reputable and leading websites that sell laptops. A comparison study is important as it will save you money.

If you are web savvy and know where to look you can save money on purchases of a laptop or other items by buying what you need on the World Wide Web.

Nintendo Wii Brings The Gym To You With Wii Fit By Karen Bennett

Nintendo has announced a new fitness game Wii Fit which is a full on exercise product set to give you more of a workout than Wii Sports, while still retaining all the fun of gaming. Wii Fit will help to keep you physically fit via a dedicated peripheral, a wireless balance board which comes with the game. There are over 40 different activities, including hula hooping, ski jumping and heading soccer balls.
The hula hooping consists of, as you’d expect, gyrating your hips with a virtual hoop onscreen and then as the game progresses, characters will throw more hoops for you to catch and rotate as many times as you can until the time runs out.
The skiing game gives you two chances to make the longest jump you can whilst keeping your balance when landing. Players can increase speed by leaning forward, the more you lean the faster you’ll go, and upon reaching the jump, you stand up straight ensuring your weight is evenly balanced for a good landing.
For the football game, you will need to balance on the board moving from side to side whilst balls are fired at you to hit back on to the field and avoiding other objects that are thrown at you at the same time.
Training falls into 4 categories: Aerobics, muscle conditioning, yoga and balance games. Players can assign their height to a profile to measure body mass index and Wii fitness age as well as monitor progress and record performance statistics.
The calorie busting fun could appeal to couch potato kids as well a non gamers, perhaps using the Nintendo Wii as a slimming tool which would be a move into the lifestyle category rather than gaming, covering the market from another angle.
Nintendo hasn't given a release date yet for Wii Fit, although its thought to hit the highstreet in early 2008.

Buy a Cheap Laptop or a Cheap Desktop? By Charles Wee

Should I buy a cheap laptop or a cheap desktop?

You may find yourself asking that question many times while shopping for a computer. This guide offers you the pros and cons of owning a laptop versus a desktop pc.

Processing speed

Comparing processing speeds, laptops usually lag behind their desktop counterparts. With the rapid advance in microchip technology, the gap between them will become smaller.

Wireless

Most laptops especially those with Intel mobile chips come with wireless capability out of the box. This means you can get online from any location at home easily without ugly wires if you have a wireless network setup at home. Desktop pcs do not typically provide this capability out of the box although that may change in the near future.

Memory

Memory chip tends to be more expensive in Laptop than desktop pcs. If you buy a laptop with less than 512MB ram, be prepare to pay more for memory upgrades than you have to with a desktop pc.

Graphics Display

Because of the size of a laptop, most business or entry level laptop use integrated graphics with limited ram. This means most laptops even some expensive ones cannot run graphics intensive applications or 3d games as well as a desktop pc. With a desktop pc, you can buy a dedicated graphics card just to serve a graphics intensive application.

Portability

Portability is why everyone wants a laptop these days. Because of their size and weight, it is easier to carry a laptop around as opposed to a desktop pc.

Screen Display

Everyone buy laptop for their portability so laptops usually do not come with screens as big as their desktop counterparts. The screen technology used is usually not as good as those used by desktop pc. Furthermore with a desktop pc, you can always upgrade to a bigger and better screen whereas for laptop you are stuck with the same screen display for the whole lifespan of the laptop.

Upgradeability

Laptops do not offer many upgrade options. You can only upgrade memory and hard disk. With a desktop you can upgrade almost anything and only limited by the motherboard. This means a cheap desktop pc offers a longer lifespan than a laptop.

So whether you should buy a cheap laptop or a cheap desktop, ask yourself what are your needs? If you want to be able to use a computer wherever you go, then you are looking at a laptop to fulfill your needs. However if you do not require the portability of a laptop, play a lot of 3D games, graphic intensive applications, if you care about upgradeability to prolong the lifespan of your investment, then desktop pc is a smarter choice for you.

When Buying A High Definition TV, Don't Believe What You See In Showrooms By Vincent Teoh

As more people buy on the web, most people thinking about getting a high definition TV would rather visit a brick-and-mortar store than buy it through a web merchant. This is perfectly understandable, because you get the chance of seeing the high definition television with your own eyes, or getting help from a salesperson before parting with your money.

But things may not be what they seem... here I will give you a few reasons why your judgment of a high definition TV in showrooms may be inaccurate.

First of all, most high definition TVs on display are configured in what is termed in the industry as "dynamic mode". By this I mean that contrast is artificially inflated and the colors are deliberately over-saturated on the high definition television, as these manipulations have been proven to boost sales.

A HDTV that is displaying in "dynamic mode" gives an impression of "brightness" and "colorfulness", usually mistaken as the telltale signs of a good TV even though the picture is — in fact — incorrect. Usually it is only when you bring the TV back home that you realize the picture is not right.

Also, in a typical shop with quite a few HD TVs on show, the signal is shared among all these televisions. As a result each high definition television gets a weaker signal, which will result in a lot of artifacts like sparkles and horizontal lines, and perhaps blurriness and loss of detail.

To compound the problem, most stores will very likely use inferior connection cables (because these are much cheaper, and the stores likely have more than their fair share lying around over time) to pass on the signal. In an ideal situation one should use a HDMI, component, VGA or DVI connection because these deliver the best quality, and can fulfill all the potential of the high definition television for you to make an accurate judgment... yet you rarely see these used in normal demos unless requested.

Another issue with your average brick-and-mortar showroom is the excessive amount of ambient lighting, not only from in-store lights and the sun, but also from competing high definition TV unitson show. This will cause glare (especially on glossy televisions) and degrade the picture contrast on the HDTV you're looking at, leading to a washed out image. Most high definition TVs perform better in the home environment where there's better ambient light control.

To conclude, there are certain shortfalls when judging HDTVs in a shop — you're looking at uncalibrated display sets with weak signals in an overly bright environment. For correct judgment of a high definition TV's true potential, you can either visit a dedicated shop with the proper setup designed to eliminate these issues, listen to the views of existing owners on public forums, or read reviews that are carried out properly under strict conditions.

Vincent Teoh is a writer for HDTV Test, an online magazine which conducts HDTV reviews professionally.
