Save The Environment By Elsa Samuel
WANT TO DO YOUR BIT TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT? START WITH WHAT YOU SPEND THE MOST TIME WITH - YOUR PC!
Shut down! Your desktop PC uses roughly 65 to 250 watts at any one time. At a tariff of 23.4sen per kilowatt/hour, that comes up to nearly RM6 an hour. A PC running on sleep mode uses 2.3watts while one that's turned off uses no energy at all. So turn it off at the end of the work day.
Sleepy does it. Try configuring your monitor (and printer) to switch to energy saver mode after 20 minutes and your hard drive to go off after 30 minutes inactivity if booting and shutting down is too much of a hassle. Setting your hard drive to sleep also extends the life of your drive too.
Turn off screen savers. This doesn't save energy but full-on monitor usage will continually zap power. You only save energy if the monitor goes dark (on standby mode).
Plug out. Turn off whatever computer accessories not in use or other devices plugged into the same power strip such as your mobile phone charger which are silent energy vampires. The main plug is sucking wattage even when nothing is used.
